Hands-on Impressions

Testing note: We installed and used this cylinder on a composite front door before swapping it out. Security certification and specifications are verified against manufacturer and BSI documentation.

Installation is straightforward — align the cam by turning the key slightly (standard practice for any euro cylinder), insert, fit the retaining screw. The whole job takes around ten minutes.

The cylinder itself feels dense and solid. Build quality is noticeably better than cheaper non-rated alternatives at a similar price point.

The key mechanism is an 11-pin reversible dimple-and-groove design. The reversibility — it inserts either way up — is a genuine daily convenience, especially in poor light. However, we switched from a cylinder with a vertical keyway and edge-profile key, and the horizontal keyway on the Orion took adjustment. Preference will vary, but if you’re used to a vertical keyway, expect a brief relearning period. Several members of our household found it less natural to operate, particularly anyone with reduced thumb strength or joint issues — the key head shape requires a specific grip that not everyone finds comfortable. If that’s a concern for your household, the Fullex Kinetica+ K4 is worth looking at: it ships with rubber key head covers that give more grip surface when turning.

The thumbturn has a button on it whose function isn’t obvious. We eventually found an explanation buried in a PDF on VBH’s website — it wasn’t in any documentation included in the box. Once you know what it does it’s fine, but GreenteQ’s packaging and instructions don’t explain it, which isn’t acceptable for something fitted to a front door. We’ll update this once we’ve confirmed the function directly with GreenteQ.

Five keys in the box is the standout practical advantage at this price. Yale Platinum, Avocet ABS and Fullex Kinetica+ K4 all ship with three as standard. For a household covering multiple family members plus a spare set, that matters.

Sizes & Variants

Variants: Key/key, thumbturn, keyed-alike pair, thumbturn keyed-alike pair.

Sizes: The Orion is available from 35/35 (70mm overall) through to 65/55 (120mm overall). GreenteQ lists the internal measurement first and external measurement second, so a 45/35 cylinder is 45mm internally and 35mm externally.

Finishes: The range is limited to Bright Nickel and Brass. There are no black, chrome or satin nickel options.

Security & Certification

The Orion holds BS TS007-1:2014+A2:2018 Kitemark 3-star certification (KM591531), independently tested and certified by BSI — not a manufacturer self-assessment.

Anti-snap protection works via a sacrificial external section: if the cylinder is attacked, that section breaks away cleanly, leaving the internal locking mechanism intact. Hardened steel rods and driver pins resist drilling. Spool driver pins increase resistance to picking and bump key attacks.

What The Orion is Missing

  • Sold Secure Diamond — Diamond certification is run by the Master Locksmiths Association and adds further drill and bump resistance testing on top of TS007. The Orion doesn’t hold it. This is only relevant if your insurer specifically mandates Diamond-rated hardware — most standard home insurance policies don’t require it..
  • Thermal and glue attack protection — The original TS007 standard didn’t test for freeze or glue attacks. TS007 was updated in 2024 to include both. The Orion was certified to the 2014 standard and doesn’t cover these attack types. GreenteQ’s own response to this is the ORION ICE, which carries full TS007:2024 accreditation and an upgraded £5,000 guarantee. Freeze and glue attacks remain rare on standard residential properties — this gap matters most if you’re specifying for a higher-risk or commercial property.
  • Fire rating — The Orion is not fire-rated. Do not fit it to a fire door.

Keys & Key Control

Five keys ship as standard — more than most direct 3-star competitors.

The keyway is restricted under GreenteQ’s Q-Secure scheme. Blanks aren’t available over the counter; additional keys must be ordered through a registered dealer using a personal password you set at registration. This prevents unauthorised duplication — relevant if you’ve lost a key or are moving into a property with unknown key history.

The trade-off is that spare keys can’t be cut cheaply at a local locksmith. Some cylinders — the Fullex Kinetica+ K4, for example — use an open keyway specifically so replacements can be cut anywhere for a few pounds. If cheap, easy spare keys matter more to you than duplication control, that’s worth factoring in.

The 11-pin mechanism with 100,000+ key differs means the cylinder’s security isn’t undermined by the restricted keyway being the only protection — the mechanism itself is the primary barrier.

Warranty & Guarantee

Two separate protections are bundled with the Orion. It is worth keeping them apart.

10-year mechanical warranty: Covers mechanical failure of the cylinder. Must be registered at qsecure.co.uk within 28 days of purchase. It does not activate automatically.

proteQ10 security guarantee: Provides up to £2,000 compensation if a break-in occurs as a direct result of the cylinder being snapped and then extracted. The guarantee is activated when you register the cylinder. The guarantee card is included in the pack. The proteQ10 guarantee has real-world limits worth knowing — it requires a FENSA-registered original installation, six-monthly lubrication with a written log, and doesn’t transfer to a new occupier. If you’re moving into a property rather than fitting new, assume the guarantee doesn’t apply to you.

Maintenance: Follow GreenteQ’s specified lubrication guidance. Using the wrong lubricant — WD-40-type penetrating oils are a common mistake because they attract grit — can affect both mechanical performance and warranty validity. Check the current terms directly with GreenteQ before relying on either guarantee, as terms can be updated.

Direct rival — Yale Platinum 3 Star. The closest like-for-like competitor. Both are TS007 3-star, both are anti-snap, both offer a 10-year mechanical guarantee. The Yale has an edge on finish choice (brass, nickel and black versus the Orion’s nickel and brass only) and is more widely stocked across UK retailers. But the Yale ships with three keys as standard, not five, and its security guarantee is a lifetime guarantee rather than a fixed £2,000 payout. For buyers who prioritise finish choice and brand familiarity, the Yale is the stronger pick. For buyers who want more keys in the box and a straightforward compensation guarantee, the Orion has the advantage.

Upgrade alternative — GreenteQ ORION ICE. This is the version of the Orion you should buy if freeze and glue attacks are a concern, or if you want to be compliant with the updated TS007:2024 standard ahead of the January 2027 deadline. The ORION ICE carries full TS007:2024 accreditation, including thermal and glue attack protection, and upgrades the proteQ10 guarantee from £2,000 to £5,000. It is also recognised by Secured by Design as a Police Preferred Specification product. It costs more than the standard Orion, but it closes the two most significant gaps in the standard model’s security profile.

Value alternative — Fullex Kinetica+ K4. If your budget stretches slightly and you want more certification for your money, the Kinetica+ K4 is the obvious step up. It holds TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond, and is fire-rated to FD60 — all three gaps in the Orion’s profile, addressed in a single cylinder. It also comes in chrome and satin nickel, which the Orion does not. The trade-off is that it ships with only three keys as standard and has a shorter 2-year guarantee, versus the Orion’s 10-year warranty and five keys.If you need Diamond and fire rating, the Kinetica+ K4 is the better buy. If you do not, the Orion is cheaper and bundles more keys.

Final Verdict

Best for

Buyers wanting a TS007 3-star cylinder with 5 keys at a competitive price

Think twice if

You need a fire-rated cylinder, a Sold Secure Diamond rating, thermal/glue attack protection, or a nickel finish

The GreenteQ Orion is a solid, honestly-priced TS007 3-star cylinder. The build quality is better than the price suggests, installation is straightforward, and five keys in the box is a genuine advantage over most competitors at this level.

Two things are worth knowing before you buy. First, the horizontal keyway and dimple key head shape isn’t universally liked — if anyone in your household has limited thumb strength or joint issues, try before committing or consider the Fullex Kinetica+ K4 with its rubber key covers instead. Second, the proteQ10 guarantee carries conditions that significantly limit its real-world value for most buyers — particularly anyone moving into a property rather than fitting to a new installation.

Neither of those is a reason to avoid it if a standard domestic door is what you’re securing. For straightforward anti-snap protection at this price, it’s a strong buy. But go in with accurate expectations rather than the headline numbers.
